Old Town Revitalization
Greenwood has undertaken several redevelopment projects in Old Town recently as it continues revitalization of the city’s downtown and surrounding areas.
Most recently, the Greenwood Redevelopment Commission (RDC) approved a project agreement between the city, CRG Residential and Great Lakes Capital to redevelop the former Greenwood Middle School property.
Major components of the agreement and anticipated outcomes include:
- $83 million total investment
- 2.5 year construction timeline, which began in 2021
- $1 million in additional annual tax revenue to the city
Main Street Streetscapes
The City of Greenwood is working on designs for another phase of improvement to Main Street, from Meridian Street to Polk Street.
Freedom Parks Pickleball Complex
Greenwood has built a 16-court pickleball facility at Freedom Park, making it the largest pickleball complex in Johnson County and has the ability to host sanctioned pickleball tournaments. As a part of the project, an additional 120 parking spots have been added to Freedom Park.
Averitt & Smith Valley Roundabout
Greenwood will build a $2.3 million roundabout at the intersection of Averitt and Smith Valley Road, just west of Greenwood Community High School and Southwest Elementary School. The roundabout will have four lanes, two in each direction, and will alleviate daily traffic backups at the intersection. Due to significant utility movement, project work has been moved back a year and will start in 2025.
Comprehensive Plan
Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers announced the development of a new Comprehensive Plan which will serve as Greenwood’s all-encompassing “blueprint for the future”.
The plan will align with the City’s Four Pillars: Public Safety, Infrastructure, Economic Development and Quality of Life.

Sports Park
The Greenwood Sports Park has opened a premier softball/baseball complex on the southside. Home to two quads (eight total fields), with artificial turf infields and natural grass outfields, it is sure to draw sports enthusiasts from near and far. The park also hosts a state-of-the-art playground, the city’s second splash pad, a multiuse sports field with a cricket pitch and an interconnected trail network.
Market Plaza
Greenwood is working on improvements to Market Plaza with the addition of sidewalks on both sides of the street, connecting Old City Park to City Center Park.
Cutsinger Road
Pearl & Madison
The City of Greenwood is looking to develop the corner of Pearl Street and Madison Avenue in Old Town Greenwood. Old Town is a historic, mixed used district where people live, work, shop, dine and play. Greenwood hopes to continue to grow this space with new opportunities for residents.
